Invergordon Distillery overlooks the Cromarty Firth in the north-east of Scotland. It was opened in 1959, and is one of only six operating grain whisky distilleries in Scotland. The cask is an American hoggy, and it has imbued the whisky with a gorgeous burnished copper hue. The aroma fills the room with top quality rum and raisin ice-cream, brandy butter and ice cream soda, and later adds a vanilla pod to the sweet and appetising mix. Water develops fruity notes alongside the ice cream (tinned or baked pears), but makes the nose slightly sour for a moment, before adding a dollop of Bird's custard. Tasted straight, the mouthfeel is somewhat thin, but this fills out massively when a little water is added. Soft, sweet and simple, a light and interesting sour note at the end, then a long finish. We think of it as a night-cap dram: sweet dreams.
Winner of the Malt Maniacs "Aeneas Coffey Award" 2005, for the best grain whisky, and a silver medal.
