The distillery was established in 1898 by a former manager of Glenfarclas, William Simpson. It was the last distillery to be built on Speyside until Tormore in 1958.
The distillery was taken over by a consortium of local businessmen who registered themselves as the Glen Elgin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. In turn, they sold on to J.J. Blanche, a Glasgow distiller and blender.
In 1936, the company was sold to DCL which licensed it to White Horse Distillers (Glen Elgin has long been a key ingredient of White Horse).
Glen Elgin is ranked "top class" by blenders, and its rarity as a single is because there is such a demand for it from blenders.
