| Glenrothes Distillery was started in 1878, the year in which the City of Glasgow Bank collapsed. the collapse had dire consequences for the firm building the distillery - it had borrowed heavily to finance the venture, and two of the directors were employed by another bank, which might well have gone the same way. All was well, as it happened, and work continued on the distillery, the partners appointed one Jame Booth Henderson as brewer. Henderson, a renowned judge of livestock, used to stable his stock of horses and cattle in the distillery, to the displeasure of his employers when they found out. Glenrothes is ranked among the top six malt whiskies by blenders, who pay a premium for it and take all they can get. It is also a constituent of the popular Famous Grouse brand. All this results in it being difficult to find as a single malt, and apart from the independent bottlers, Berry Bros & Rudd has the exclusive license to bottle it as such.
