Miltonduff

Category: Speyside
Distiller: George Ballantine & Son
Owner: Allied Distilers
Status: Operational

Three miles outside Elgin, close to the Pluscarden Priory, the distillery was licensed in 1824 as Miltonduff-Glenlivet.

It was renovated in the 1890's but suffered badly in the whisky crash of 1900.

It was sold to Hiram Walker in 1936, which licensed it to George Ballantine & Sons.

Alfred Barnard, visiting Miltonduff in 1877, wrote, "Some of the oldest fads and methods are in use [here], and the ancient style of stills and utensils, as carried on by the smugglers, have also be continued."

Extract from The Mitchell Beazley Pocket Whisky Book by the whisky expert Charles Maclean.
